Rafa Munárriz’s sculptural proposal is based on the concept of the *undertow*, understood in its maritime sense as a space of tension where opposing currents coexist, collide, and generate new configurations. From this perspective, the work takes the geographical context of Cádiz as its point of departure—a territory shaped by both commercial and migratory flows, positioning the Strait as a site of friction between global currents.
Formally, the sculpture consists of six transformed aluminum trays that articulate a structure based on the intersection of two perpendicular rhythms. On the one hand, a more regular and repetitive arrangement refers to industrial systems of production, forming a kind of modular barrier. On the other, a series of more gestural deformations introduces variations that evoke error, the unforeseen, or the residual within those same processes.
The interaction between these two registers produces an unstable spatial configuration that alternates between areas of openness and enclosure in relation to the scale of the body, inviting a physical experience of passage and containment. In this sense, the work reflects on how the logics of global standardization coexist with deviations that, rather than being mere failures, can assume a critical or even emancipatory character.…
