DON´T CROSS THE BRIDGE BEFORE YOU GET TO THE RIVER

The artist´s intervention Don´t croos the bridge before you get to the river was undertaken in 2008, in Strait of Gibraltar, that sepatares Europe from Africa in 14 kilometres of coast, where ilegal immigrants risk their lives crossing the passageway.

In his log Alÿs writes:

“The Strait seemed like the obvius place to illustrate this contradiction of our times: how can one at the same promote global economy and at the same time limit the global flow of people across continents?”

This ambitious project contains with gaditan and african childrens colaboration, all portrayed as giants, balance boats on their heads while crossing the Strait. All them formed an imaginary line between spanish and Moroccan side respectively, a imaginary bridge between continents.

La intervención del artista Francis Alÿs Don´t cross the bridge before you get to the river se llevó a cabo en 2008, en el Estrecho de Gibraltar que separa Europa y África. Con tan solo una distancia de tan solo 14 kilómetros entre continentes, es un lugar peligroso para los inmigrantes ilegales que intentan hacerse camino hacia un nuevo continente y una nueva vida.

Para Alÿs , “El Estrecho parecía el lugar obvio para ilustrar esta contradicción de nuestro tiempo : ¿Cómo se puede promover la economía global y al mismo tiempo limitar el flujo mundial de personas en todos los continentes ” Para ello , se llevó a cabo un ambicioso proyecto con la ayuda de los niños de ambos lados del Estrecho , España y Marruecos. Pidió a los niños hacer flotar barcos de juguete hechos con velas de paño y sandalias. La idea era tener dos líneas de niños, uno de la costa española y otro de la costa marroquí, que encontrarse más allá del horizonte, crease un puente imaginario entre los continentes europeo y africano.
