Rafa Munárriz. Resaca Rojo Oriente, 2026.

Rafa Munárriz’s sculptural proposal stems from the concept of the “resaca” understood in its maritime dimension: a space of tensions where opposing currents coexist, clash, and generate new configurations. Building upon this idea, the piece draws reference from the geographical context of Cádiz—a territory traversed by both commercial and migratory transit dynamics that position the Strait as a point of friction between global flows.

Formally, the sculpture is composed of six transformed aluminum trays that articulate a structure based on the intersection of two perpendicular rhythms. On one hand, a more regular and repetitive arrangement recalls industrialized systems of production, shaping a sort of modular barrier. On the other hand, a series of more gestural deformations introduces variations that evoke error, the unforeseen, or the residual within those very processes.

The interaction between both registers generates an unstable space that alternates areas of openness and closure in relation to the scale of the body, inviting a physical experience of transit and containment. In this sense, the work prompts a reflection on how the logics of global standardization coexist with deviations which—far from being mere flaws—can acquire a critical or even emancipatory character.

Grounded in the Cadiz environment, the piece establishes an analogy between the circulation systems of the global market, which operate as an abstract barrier, and the migratory flows that cross the Strait, revealing a constant tension between control and movement, between imposed order and organic dynamics.
